How to Add Chemicals and in What Order

The following is general advice only. Requirements for individual pools and pool systems may vary.

Adding chemicals to your pool may seem confusing. What do I add? When do I add it? How much do I add? Where do I add it?

Tips and hints for adding chemicals

We have prepared this handy guide comprising tips and hints for adding chemicals to ensure their greatest effectiveness and most importantly, safety:

1. Add chemicals slowly.

2. Keep pump and filter running when adding chemicals - on either the recirculate or filter setting.

3. After adding each chemical, let the water circulate and dissipate.

NOTE: DO NOT mix chemicals together outside the pool because this can cause toxic gas or even explode.

What order do I add my chemicals?

For the best results, chemicals should be added in the following sequence to reduce the likelihood of your water going cloudy or reduce the chemicals' effectiveness.

1. Adjust total alkalinity to help prevent fluctuations with your pH. This is because anything you add to adjust your pool's alkalinity will affect your pool's pH.

2. Adjust your pH. This will help your chlorine work more effectively.

3. Adjust your chlorine. If you have a saltwater pool, ensure that your salt levels are sufficient to keep your chlorine levels in range and your salt generator working.

4. Adjust cyanuric acid (if required). If you are using a stabilised chlorine, or you have an indoor pool, this will not be necessary. This is because stabilised chlorine already contains cyanuric acid (AKA stabiliser), and indoor pools are not affected by the sun's UV rays.

5. Adjust your calcium hardness levels. These can do more long-term damage, such as eroding parts in your pool.
