How to Treat Your Pool After the Storm has Passed

The following is general advice only. Requirements for individual pools and pool systems may vary.

The storm has come and gone, now what?

Has your pool been impacted by a storm? Heavy rainfall, increased water volume, flooding, and debris can all affect your pool’s cleanliness and chemical balance.

By following these simple steps, you can restore your pool after the storm has passed and return to swimming in no time.

1. Check Your Pool Equipment

After a storm, the first thing to do is inspect your pool equipment for any damage. Check the pump, filter, and electrical parts to ensure they're working correctly. If you're unsure whether any damage has occurred, contact us for a comprehensive assessment.

Signs of damage may be obvious, such as visual damage arising from debris, or less obvious, such as unfamiliar noises coming from your pump which may indicate the unit has been damaged or simply observing that your system is not working as it should.

Our highly skilled pool technicians can help assess and diagnose damage and provide you with the most cost effective and suitable course of action to rectify it.

2. Clean Your Pool

Remove all debris (such as leaves, branches, dirt, or other materials) from your pool water. Skim the surface of your pool and clean out the pump and skimmer baskets.

3. Check Your Pool’s Water Level

Monitor your pool’s water level. If required, partially drain the pool to the required level (generally ¾ of the way up the skimmer).

4. Backwash the Filter

Clean your pool’s filter by backwashing for media filters or cleaning the cartridge to remove any accumulated debris.

5. Vacuum the Pool

Vacuum the pool floor and walls to remove smaller or settled debris from the bottom of the pool.

6. Shock Your Pool

Add a ‘shock’ treatment to raise chlorine levels and kill any bacteria that may have entered your pool with rainwater.

7. Test Your Pool Water

Heavy rainfall can disrupt your pool water's chemical balance, particularly its pH and chlorine levels. To balance your pool water, test the water so you can adjust the chemical levels as required.

To achieve the most effective reading, ensure you take the water sample from elbow depth, rather than from the pool’s surface.

WaterPro Pool and Spa has automated water testing machines which ensure you receive the most accurate readings every time. Our water test reports explain exactly which chemicals and in what quantities you need to rebalance your pool water, having regard to your pool’s specifications (such as pool size, surface, and sanitiser).

Our system records all pool test results allowing you to monitor your pool water’s chemical balance over time, which in turn helps to identify anomalies or system deficiencies which may not be visible to the naked eye.

8. Balance Your Pool

Follow the instructions outlined in your water test to rebalance your pool’s water.

To prevent algae growth, consider adding an algaecide, particularly if the pool is cloudy or green.

9. Run the Filtration System

Keep the pool pump running on filter mode to circulate water and remove remaining debris.

Remember – Safety First: Always follow safety guidelines when handling pool chemicals.
