How to Utilise Shock Treatments to Maintain Chemical Balances
The following is general advice only. Requirements for individual pools and pool systems may vary.
Shock treatments are a great way to keep chlorine active and kill contaminates.
Shock Treatment Options
This article discusses two types of shock treatments available:
Non-chlorine shock (or oxidiser). This helps revitalise free chlorine and break up combined chlorine in the water.
Chlorine shock. This is more powerful treatment and can actively kill contaminates. Chlorine shock is a better option for problem solving larger issues like cloudy water or algae.
Benefits of shock treatments
What are the benefits of adding shock treatments to your pool and when should you do so?
Non-chlorine shock
Adding non-chlorine shock once a week is a simple way to keep your free, total and combined chlorine levels in check.
Chlorine shock
Use chlorine shock if you have a lot of swimmers, after a heavy rain, to clear up cloudy water or to kill algae.
Ensure you balance your pH before shocking your water because shock can change your chlorine levels and your pH. Then, re-test your water after shocking and adjust chemical levels to the recommended standard as required.
